Skin equations – Whole thing = Skin plus what’s left

November 13, 2018

I must be mad, but somehow I agreed that we would peel things again. 31 kids with 16 peelers = lots of safety talks about peeling carefully.

And why are we peeling? To create skin equations of course. This session was all about recording. How can we record what we have?

1) Visuals – photos, drawings, paintings

2) Words – descriptions, texts

3) Numbers – measurements, weights, lengths

And what are we recording? Our skin equations.

What we start with (potato, carrot, apple) = the peeled skin + what’s left….. or does it?

For this activity we split the class into 6 groups – 2 had apples, 2 had potatoes, 2 had carrots. Pupils worked in pairs to record their fruit/veg as it is whole before very carefully peeling and recording the results. The observations were amazing, as I’m sure you’ll agree!
