We all made an image of our own head and face, life-size or larger, first with pencil, then oil pastel. We spoke about proportions, positions for eyes, nose and ears; frontal views and profiles. We looked carefully at our faces, our features, expressions and so on. We viewed an image of Spanish Artist FRANCISCO de Goya, the Self Portrait in the Studio 1790, where he stands at his easel about to paint. He is wearing a hat with candles around the brim… we took time once again to respond to this image.  What sort of hat was it? Why was he wearing it?  Why was he painting in the dark? Why were there candles on the brim? The children thought he looked like a magician, that the candles would mean he worked with a calming sound from the flickering light. They said that the candles might provide guidance, like a shining light and perhaps might brighten his mind. One said that when he moved with this candle hat on, that light would follow him…
